Still Debating Whether to Take That Day Off? Here’s the Strategy That Works

Last week, I had a coaching call with an investment banker who asked me something that stuck:
“I don’t understand if I should take PTOs as they accrue or save them for a long break?”
It’s a great question—and here’s the truth I shared with him (backed by research): You need both.
Let’s break it down.
📌 Micro-Recovery = Short, frequent breaks
Just like quick naps recharge you during the day, short PTOs sprinkled throughout your quarter lower stress, reduce decision fatigue, and improve focus. Think:
One long weekend every quarter
A random Friday off every other month. Small, planned pauses can significantly increase your clarity and emotional resilience.
📌 Macro-Recovery = Longer, uninterrupted breaks
Research from Harvard Business Review found that it takes 7+ days of real disconnection to reset your nervous system, restore creative thinking, and reconnect with purpose. These breaks are vital for strategy, vision, and mental health.
So what’s the formula?
If you accrue 2 PTOs a month:
➡️ Use 1 for mini-breaks
➡️ Save 1 for a 7–10 day stretch annually
But wait—what should you do during that long break besides sleep?
This was his second question, and it’s one I love.
Here’s what I recommend:
1. Spend time in solitude – Let your thoughts breathe without distraction.
2. Journal intentionally – Reconnect with your goals, values, and what matters to you.
3. Invest in relationships – Be with people who don’t expect your resume, just your presence.
4. Ask for help – Whether it’s friends or ChatGPT doing your meal planning, lighten your load.
This isn’t just about time off—it’s about returning stronger, clearer, and more fulfilled.
So here’s your permission to stop waiting for the “perfect time.” Design your PTO strategy like your health depends on it—because it does.
