In today's blog, I am going to talk about how to learn English in a few easy steps.
Learning a new language can be a scary process that many people struggle with. People might get demotivated in the absence of adequate assistance, learning resources, and feedback. Learning English, like learning any other new language, can be full of difficulties that might hamper your learning and progress.
But don't worry! With so many free sources of information (videos, podcasts, online classes, e-books, webinars, and more) available on the internet today, there has never been a better moment to learn the English language - even from the comfort of your own home and at your own time and pace!
There are a few methods that you can use as both a novice and advanced learner of the English language to improve your skill and fluency. While you may be familiar with some of these, others may be new to you!
1. Start reading!
We live in a time when there is a wide range of reading material available at the click or tap of a button. Reading is an excellent way to expand your vocabulary and become acquainted with new sentence patterns while also keeping you engaged!
Whether you choose fantasy, fiction, action books, simply newspapers, journals, or nonfiction articles on the newest scientific discoveries, reading allows you to become acquainted with a language that you do not normally speak regularly.
2. Make it a point to speak English every day.
Speaking in English every day is the best approach to learning English quickly. Only by engaging in daily conversation practice with a fluent speaker, you will become fluent. The more you practice speaking English to learn it, the faster you will become proficient.
Learning through conversations allows learners to increase their retention of new words, improve their understanding of grammar, better recognize words, and speak more fluently and confidently.
There are numerous ways to communicate in English from the comfort of your own home. When you have time, call your friends and practice conversing with them. Alternatively, you can also choose English tutors who will talk to you over video calls to help you practice your English.
3. Join an English Learner Community.
You will be shocked to know that even other language learners face similar problems and difficulties when they first start learning a new language. Learning a new language, whether it is to improve your pronunciation or understand the tenses, can be a frustrating process. But, overcoming this frustration might become easy when you are in touch with like-minded learners with similar aims and goals.
You can participate in a community-driven learning process by sharing your ideas and successes in this process of learning a new language from your own home.
Facebook is one such platform where you can find groups for English learners. You can sort through a few to select one that is suited to English speakers at your level of proficiency.
4. Listen to podcasts.
Hearing a language can help you improve your comprehension. While it may take a few months of practice to understand podcasts with native English speakers, there are many podcasts available specifically for language learners.
Listen to the podcast as white noise first, then play it again to see what new words you can recognize. You can also read the transcript of the episode as you listen, repeating sentences and words aloud. This can help you learn new vocabulary and grammar faster, and it can be adjusted to play at a slower speed.
5. Look Out for New Terms!
Words are the foundation of any language. The more words you have in your vocabulary, the better you will be able to express yourself and communicate with others. There's a good possibility you will come across a word that you are unfamiliar with, whether reading a book, watching a movie, or interacting with someone.
Just imagine how many new words you can learn if you make an effort to take note of the new words you come across in your day-to-day life. This is what you should do whenever you come across a word that you don't recognize. Instead of ignoring the word, make a mental note of it and check it up either on Google or in a dictionary to find out what it means.
Developing your vocabulary is essential for studying a new language, and it may be as simple as writing down any new words you come across so you can look them up later. You may take this a step further by going back over your ever-growing word collection to see if you recall what the terms mean. Make an attempt to build sentences using the new terms you have learned or try attempting to use them in conversation.
6. Maintain a journal in English.
This may be one of the most difficult aspects of learning English, but it's still important. Writing in English will help you with improving your sentence structure, grammar, and spelling.
Make a habit of keeping a journal in English in which you write a few sentences and phrases every day. It can be anything. You can write about the weather, what you ate for breakfast, what your plans are for the day, or about your daily activities, in English. If you are comfortable with it, then ask any native speaker to read what you have written and check for any errors. This will help you in the future to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
7. Watch videos or shows in English.
Nowadays, it's easy to discover TV series or movies in English to watch online. Some shows may also include subtitles to help you learn more about what you are listening to. For this, try switching between having subtitles on and off. A more engaged approach to learning will give better results than just passively watching.
8. Practice, practice, and practice.
You know what they say! Practice makes a person perfect. You may be performing well in your English lesson this week thanks to English learning materials, but unless you practice what you have learned on a regular basis, you may struggle to recall and apply what you have learned. Looking over English worksheets, and class notes, and quizzing yourself at home is also another great way to continue your practice.
9. Make a Study Plan for Learning the Language
There is so much to learn in the English language. It can feel like an impossible job that will never be completed. A study plan makes English learning more manageable. It helps you to divide the large task of learning English into smaller chunks. Learning English then appears to be less challenging when you focus on these small milestones.
A study plan also helps you to track your progress. Comparing your learning over time will show you how you are progressing and what needs to be changed. This improves the effectiveness of learning. Making a study plan will compel you to create goals. Goals will then provide you with a clear picture of where to begin and how to proceed.
Making your study schedule allows you to learn at your own pace. You can learn whenever you want and fit your studies around your schedule, no matter how hectic life gets! What's the best part? Study plans are motivating! Working toward your objectives offers you the motivation you need to continue learning even when things get rough!
Conclusion:
When you are learning any new language, it’s important to keep your motivation up. As with any task, there may be times when it feels somewhat more difficult. So change up your tactics and don't be scared to make mistakes. It is natural for everyone to make mistakes. Making mistakes can actually help you improve.
And always remove these terms from your dictionary - ‘I can’t do it’, ‘I don’t speak English,’ or ‘I’ll never get this done.’ Instead try saying, ‘I’m learning English and I am making improvements every day,’ ‘It might not be easy, but the effort is worth it,’ or ‘I’m so much better than I was 6 months back.’ You will eventually reach the level you aim to be.
